Because HVAC systems consist of many unique mechanical, electrical, and electronic components-such as motors, pumps, fans, ducts, pipes, compressors and thermostats-HVAC technicians often specialize in either installation or repair, although they are generally adept at doing both.

The increased complexity of HVAC systems, increasing the possibility that equipment may malfunction, also will create opportunities for service technicians. Technicians who specialize in maintenance and repair work are typically in demand. People and businesses depend on their climate-control systems and must keep them in good working order, regardless of economic conditions. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment in construction is expected to rise 19 percent. Demand for commercial construction and an increase in road, bridge, and tunnel construction will account for the bulk of job growth..

Law Enforcement

The field of law enforcement includes a wide array of career paths, such as police officer, security guard, probation/parole officer, park and forestry officer, correctional officer and more. With growing inmate populations and stricter institutional mandates, county and state correctional departments need trained and certified employees.

Employment of police officers is expected to grow about as fast as the average for all occupations through 2014. A more security-conscious society and concern about drug-related crimes should contribute to the increasing demand for police services. Because each position requires distinct personality types, educational backgrounds, and experiences, you should research several of the branches that may interest you.

Nursing and Nursing Assistant

Nursing is the dynamic interpersonal goal-directed process that seeks to promote optimal health within the context of individuals, family, community and society. The concept of caring, which is central to nursing, is communicated through both attitude and action. The aging Baby Boomer population is expected to keep nurses in high demand for many years to come. The U.S. Buru of Labor Statistics reports that about 26 percent of all new jobs created in the U.S. economy will be in the healthcare and social assistance industry. This industry which includes public and private hospitals, nursing and residential care facilities, and individual and family services is expected to grow by 24 percent, or 4 million new jobs. Employment growth will be driven by an aging population and longer life expectancies..

Occupational Therapy Assistant

Are you interested in helping people with mental, physical, developmental and emotional impairments live a better life? Then perhaps you should consider a career as an occupational therapy assistant. Occupational therapy assistants work under the direction of an occupational therapist to rehabilitate clients who have suffered from a variety of illnesses and injuries that impede their ability to live an independent lifestyle.

The U.S. Buru of Labor Statistics reports that among service occupation subgroups, the largest number of new jobs will occur in healthcare support occupations. With more than 1.1 million new jobs, employment in this subgroup is expected to increase by 29 percent. Much of the growth will be the result of increased demand for healthcare services as the expanding elderly population requires more care.

Welding

A welding program will provide you with the skills and knowledge identified by the American Welding Society Skill Standards. You will be taught welding skills and theory, fabrication, layout, print reading, welding symbols, math and welding codes. Employment of welding, soldering and brazing workers is expected to grow more slowly than average for all occupations over the 2004 to 2014 period. Despite this, job prospects should be excellent as employers report difficulty finding enough qualified people. In addition, many openings are expected to arise as a large number of workers retire over the next decade.
