Instructor Honored for Teaching Diversity

(11/1/11): The staff at WITC-Rice Lake honored sociology
teacher Kathy Doe with the college's 2011 Diversity Award. The award celebrates
individuals or groups who demonstrate practices so that everyone feels
respected, valued and safe at WITC. Doe will select or commission a permanent
piece of art to be displayed at WITC in her honor.
One of Doe's nominators wrote, "Student opinions are
welcomed in controversial areas and this instructor has a nonthreatening way of
challenging students to rethink their assumptions."
Doe teaches introduction to sociology, introduction to
ethics and race, ethnic, and diversity studies. She earned a master's degree in
social work at the University of Minnesota and practiced social work in North
Dakota, Florida and Wisconsin before becoming a full-time instructor at WITC in
2005. She also teaches courses in the Criminal Justice Law Enforcement program.
Doe, advisor to a Gay Straight Alliance student
organization at WITC-Rice Lake, said she will look for art related to that
community.
She said she is proud to have been recognized by her
colleagues and of WITC's commitment to diversity.
