WITC barber/cosmetology students medal in statewide competition

WITC-Rice Lake Barber/Cosmetology student Taylor Gappa landed the top prize in the cosmetology competition at the Wisconsin State SkillsUSA conference.

(5/7/12): Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College barber/cosmetology students took home big honors from the 38th Annual State Leadership and Skills Conference in April in Wisconsin Dells.

WITC-Rice Lake student Taylor Gappa landed the top prize in the 2012 cosmetology competition. WITC-Superior students Emily Modin captured second place and Rene Miniatt finished in third place, which made it a sweep for WITC.

Gappa will represent WITC at the national competition in June in Kansas City, Mo.

“Taylor is an outstanding student and put in many hours of preparation for the event,” said Jolie Losey, WITC-Rice Lake barber/cosmetology instructor.

The students were judged on their skills completing a longer haircut and design as well as a shorter version haircut using a razor.

All work was performed on mannequins. Written test scores and phone interviews were also factored into the total scores.

"It was a very positive experience for both the students and me," said Charley Thompson, WITC-Superior barber/cosmetology instructor. "We will definitely be looking forward to participating again."

WITC-Superior barber/cosmetology students Emily Modin, left, and Rene Miniatt recently placed second and third place at SkillsUSA, a statewide trades competition in Wisconsin Dells.

SkillsUSA is a national nonprofit organization serving teachers, high school and college students who are preparing for careers in trade, technical and skilled service occupations.

This is the first time WITC's barber/cosmetology program has competed in a statewide competition.
