GENERAL COURSE OVERVIEW

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Internship is designed to provide students with on-the-job experiences in actual work situations.  These experiences strengthen student competencies through participation in a wide variety of occupational experiences, ranging from routine assignments to specialized work-related duties.

COURSE COMPETENCIES/OBJECTIVES:
This course is based upon the following identified and validated competencies; and upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:

1.                   Understand job positions with corresponding responsibilities.

2.                   Demonstrate professional attitudes, appearance, work habits and confidentiality.

3.                   Understand position interrelationships.

4.                   Establish priorities in organizing and completing work assignments.

5.                   Apply occupational competencies in work assignments.

6.                   Accept constructive criticism.

For your reference, a tentative schedule is attached.

METHODS OF INSTRUCTION
The instructional format used for this course is based entirely around a “student internship.”  Internship is defined as the educational experience that gives students opportunities to attain work experience that is directly correlated with in-school instruction.

As explained earlier in this syllabus, this course is designed to allow you the opportunity to apply what you’ve been learning in your classroom training that you have received at WITC.  The hours required for three credits are 216 hours of actual on-the-job related work experience/Internship. This course is also available for 1 or 2 credits, (total class hours change accordingly).

The student progress report serves as an outline of required forms, reports, and evaluations that are required for this class.  Also please pay close attention to the due dates for each of these items.  Again, I would like to remind you that it is your responsibility to abide by this schedule and to meet or report to me weekly to provide an update of your internship hours and activities.

Student interns are responsible and will be held accountable for the following:

1.                  To develop with instructor and employer an individual Intern Training Plan this identifies competencies to be attained during your work experience.

2.                  To contact the work site supervisor as well as appropriate WITC instructional staff when he/she will be absent or tardy.  Neither unexcused absences nor tardiness will be tolerated.

3.                  To exhibit honesty and a professional manner while “on-the-job.”

4.                  To complete, within specified timeliness, all assignments to the best of their abilities.

5.                  To follow appropriate hygiene, grooming, and attire practices.

6.                  To attempt first to solve all problems, concerns, and/or questions arising on-the-job with the employer supervisor.  If necessary, WITC instructional personnel should be contacted.

7.                  To maintain confidentiality at all times.

8.                  To keep accurate and complete records necessary for the internship experience.

9.                  To meet with instructor weekly throughout the internship.

10.              Present a summary report (oral) of your experiences and accomplishments.

To assist you in your planning a student progress report is also enclosed in this syllabus.

GRADING POLICY
Grades will be determined by the completion of student and job site forms, reports, evaluations and a portfolio.  There will be no tests or exams given in the course.  If all requirements are met, your final grade should equal your job-site performance appraisal.  Also note that a major emphasis for your final grade will be placed on your essay assignment and oral report which should summarize all of your activities, competencies learned, etc.  An important element in this course is to have close communication with your immediate job-site supervisor and me as your instructor.  It is your responsibility to complete all assigned work and provide me with a weekly update of your progress and experiences.

Specific dates are set (see attached student progress report) for required assignments, reports, and evaluations.  Again, please remember it is your responsibility to abide by this schedule.  Failure to do so will result in a lowered grade or non-acceptance even when completed (if late).

The method used to determine your final grade for this class will be as follows:

10%     Forms (Course Orientation, Internship Training Agreement, Intern Training Plan and Current Organization Chart).

30%     Reports (Job/Task Analysis, Current Job Description, Work Experience Itinerary, Internship Essay and Oral Report).

50%     Evaluations (Work Site Supervisor, Student and Instructor).

5%       Letters of Appreciation

5%       Portfolio (Organized collection of all course materials).

100%  Final Grade

The standard grading scale will be used as identified in the current student handbook.  However, if you discuss it with me, and we reach an agreement within the first week of the semester, potential options for grading can be A-F, pass-fail, or contract grading.

ATTENDANCE POLICY
Exceptional attendance for this course is expected because you will be working at a job site; your attendance while working at that job site will serve as your class attendance.  This will be combined with the established weekly meetings/conferences we will have on campus.  For excessive absences, I will follow procedures as outlined in the student handbook.  If you have any questions or have a problem, please do not hesitate to ask for help.

SAFETY
Because of the nature of this class your on-the-job supervisor should orient you and be responsible for your safety orientation and procedures to be followed.

If anytime I can be of assistance or if you were to have an accident on-the-job, inform your supervisor and me immediately!

SPECIAL ASSISTANCE AVAILABLE
If you would like special assistance or are a special needs student contact a WITC Counselor or me immediately.  Again, if at anytime you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to talk to me or your job-site supervisor.

If you need to contact me when you are on the job, please call or stop by my office.  If I am not in, please leave a note in my mailbox, an e-mail  or a message on my voicemail.  I am typically in my office when not in class or at lunch.  My schedule is posted at the entrance to my office and on the bulletin board next to the Instructor Office in the hallway.

IMPORTANT NOTICE
If you have a question or problem at any time, please do not hesitate to see me or ask for help during or after class.

I SINCERELY HOPE YOU ENJOY THE COURSE AND YOUR WORK EXPERIENCE!!!
