II. GENERAL COURSE OVERVIEW

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

A course to strengthen the professional image. Students begin to develop self-awareness of elements affecting their personal and work relationships. Guidelines for determining appropriate grooming, dress, and poise will be covered. Personal life management along with career life goal setting will be reinforced. This class should be taken the last semester of the program.

CORE ABILITIES AND INDICATORS:

  1. Develop a sense of professional ethics.
  2. Communicate on the job.
  3. Establish and meet clearly defined goals.
  4. Maintain grooming and dress appropriately.
  5. Obtain employment using learned techniques and skills.
  6. Examine sources of stress and its impact on employees in the workplace.

COURSE COMPETENCIES/PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:

Upon successful completion of this course, the student in accordance with the grading standards will be able to:

1. Establish personal and career goals with positive attitudes toward work relations and interact effectively with others.
2. Apply time management principles and engage stress management techniques.
3. Develop recognition of how one’s values and ethics affect the workplace.
4. Develop professional attitudes through appropriate dress, grooming, and social behavior.
5. Establish personal plan of financial management.
6. Develop behaviors and practices that promote personal health and well-being.
7. Identify issues of concern to the workplace.

III. INSTRUCTIONAL FORMAT:

The instructional method used for this course will vary from a traditional classroom approach. Students will be given the initiative and responsibility to plan, implement and present specific learning activities which complement the course competencies, core abilities and outcomes. Each class will be conducted like a business meeting, which will include an agenda and ample time for dialogue and input from all the participants present. Various types of learning will be stimulated through Internet research, reading assignments, numerous handouts, participate in "Make A Difference Day and/or Service Learning", creating a 3-ring and e-portfolio as well as actively participate in class and specifically small group activities.  Presentations by students, potential guest speakers, instructor lectures, audio visuals, student written assignments, projects, and possible class field trip(s) may also be included. An emphasis will be placed on students identifying current workplace issues, conducting research on such topics, complete an Professional Development Plan, Informational Interview and presenting oral and written information regarding their topic(s).

This class is intended to help you evaluate, identify and polish up your personal and professional image. It requires "you" to make it worthwhile. During all class activities you will be expected to act responsibly, work cooperatively, communicate clearly and work productively. There will be specific dates when a professional wardrobe will be required.

IV. GRADING POLICY:

Grades will be determined by your written assignments, portfolio, class projects, critiques, and participation.  A contract grading system will be utilized and for your use a student progress report form is attached (See attached pages for details). An A-F grade system will be followed. Also, please refer to the current Student Handbook for further details.  Student Handbooks are available thru any of  the WITC Student Services Offices and are also assessable on-line at www.witc.edu .

All assignments and class projects will be graded as acceptable or not acceptable. Guidelines for the minimum requirements of an acceptable project assignment will be explained in detail.

Students opting for A, B and C grades must put all written assignments and graded materials into a portfolio along with copies of their contract requirements and contracts.

Also, because this is a professional profile course, your inability to demonstrate appropriate grooming, attitude, initiative, ethics, goal setting, self-confidence, and values with regard to quality work may automatically result in a D, F, or I grade for this course. On a limited basis, extra credit maybe available. Please make a notation in your calendar that all written assignments, reports, etc., are to be completed and turned in for final grading on a predetermined date prior to the end of the semester.

ALSO NOTE: Without good attendance and participation, it is impossible to have a good "professional profile".  Also please remember, to pass this course, you must complete a professional development plan, assigned research reports, a current health/wellness assessment, personal budget and informational interview which shall meet both written and oral criteria.  Plus, all course materials must be well organized and included in a student/class portfolio.

V. ATTENDANCE POLICY:

Attendance is an important part of this class. Because this class only meets for 8 weeks during the 4th quarter for two hours per week, if a student has over four absences it will result in referral to Student Services and a possible 100% letter. You will be expected to maintain your own attendance record as well as call into WITC or make special arrangements with me if you are not able to attend class. Because of the nature of this course, students do have the potential to "Job Out" but to do so properly you must follow the WITC Guidelines which includes communicating with and having approval from your Instructors and Advisor.  To help you get engaged in your Professional Employment and Development, I highly encourage students to consider this option.  But please note, that your final grade will still be determined by the same assessment criteria.

*A special note: Students who do not follow the "Job Out" requirements and miss class excessively and do not participate in class discussions and activities could receive a D or F even if all other course requirements have been met!

VI. ADVANCED STANDING:

Students interested in advanced standing for this course should contact Ms. Ellen Riely Hauser, Dean of Instructional Operations for the WITC-Ashland Campus Business Department.

VII. SAFETY

Be extremely careful when entering and leaving our classroom. If at any time there is an accident, please inform me immediately.

There are various Fire/Emergency exits on campus. I will inform you of them on our first day of class. An emergency exit poster is also located on the bulletin board in our classrooms.

VIII. SPECIAL ASSISTANCE AVAILABLE:
