ADVANCED STANDING
Students interested in requesting advanced standing for this course should contact me as soon as possible or the WITC Student Success Technician on our campus.

INSTRUCTIONAL FORMAT
The instructional method used for this course will be somewhat similar to a traditional classroom approach. Various types of learning will be stimulated through reading assignments, handouts, class/small group discussion, presentations by students and possible guest speakers, instructor lectures, audio visuals, written assignments and tests. A key element in this course is that you read the textbook assignment prior to each class and come to class prepared to discuss the content and participate in a class activity. Many class sessions will involve your participating in a small group/team activity, your attendance and class participation is critical and will be reflected in your final grade.

Following each class session, in reflection of what was covered, I encourage you to write a paragraph or more in your portfolio/notebook identifying what you learned.

For your reference, a proposed time schedule and outline is attached. Please note that this schedule may vary based on student interests and needs.

GRADING PROCEDURE
You should consider your final grade the same as a paycheck. Your final grade for this course will be determined by your class participation, tests, and written assignments.

Hopefully, this will not ever be a concern; however, if anyone cheats on a test, written assignment or other class activities, they will receive a zero for that test, assignment or activity and will be withdrawn (or given a failing grade) for this course.

Specific dates will be set for assignments, class presentations/projects, and exams. Late assignments will not be accepted. It is your responsibility to abide by this schedule and always keep a back-up copy of any work completed or turned in. Also take note that no written assignments will be accepted after a unit/part test is given. Please make a notation in your calendar that all written assignments, tests, etc. are to be completed and turned in for final grading prior to the last class session or as identified during the class orientation.

CLASS PARTICIPATION

  • Class participation, study groups, portfolio, and journal (optional).

  • Written Assignments (16 Chapters – must be typed and turned in prior to the unit assessment/test)

  • Unit Assessments/Tests (If a test is taken after the scheduled date, 5% will be deducted from your final score.)

25% Class participation, small group/team activities, portfolio/notebook

25% Chapter Written Assignments (Chapters 1-16)

50% Assessments/Tests (which may include traditional and alternative types of assessments)

100% Final Grade

A limited amount of extra credit (such as Service Learning) may be available with prior approval. See attached Student Progress Report Form and refer to the current Student Handbook for the grading scale and other policies.  Student Handbooks are available through the Student Services Office or on-line at www.witc.edu .

ATTENDANCE
Class attendance is not mandatory, although it will be in your best interest to maintain an excellent attendance record. If you have a conflict, I am very willing to work out a substitute activity or an opportunity to make up class work if notified before you are going to be gone.

If a student has more than four absences, it will result in referral to Educational Services or a possible 100% letter. You will be expected to record your own attendance record and call WITC or make special arrangements with me if you are not able to attend class.

SAFETY
Be extremely careful when entering and leaving our classroom. If at any time there is an accident, please inform me immediately.

There are various Fire/Emergency exits on campus. I will inform you of them on our first day of class. An emergency exit poster is also located on the bulletin board in our classroom.

SPECIAL ASSISTANCE AVAILABLE
If you have a disability, problem or concern and/or if you and any of your classmates feel you would like some additional help, please ask and I will gladly set up a time to get together.  If needed, tutors can also be arranged. Otherwise, if you ever have any questions or concerns feel free to talk to me – that’s why I am here!

When I am not in class or at lunch, I typically can be found in my office in the instructor office area. My schedule is posted at the entrance to my office and on the bulletin board next to the instructor office area.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: If you ever have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to talk to me about them before, after, or outside of class.

I SINCERELY HOPE YOU ENJOY THE COURSE!
