Progress Report #1

(From Board Chair, Hal Helwig - August 17, 2007)

Presidential Search
The Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College Board of Trustees is pleased to announce that the search process has begun for the next college president.  The Board is committed to conducting an equitable, fair and national search that will attract a strong pool of presidential candidates.  We are committed to undertaking a process that will allow us to keep the college community informed and involved.  We will make every effort to keep the College informed through the distribution of regular progress reports, posting of information on the College’s web page, and formal reporting during the regular meetings of the Board.

The Presidential Screening Committee

The Board of Trustees appointed the members of the Presidential Screening Committee at their September 17, 2007 meeting. The Board appointed an inclusive group of individuals representing faculty, students, staff, community members, the Foundation and members of the Board.  The Presidential Screening Committee's charge will include reviewing applications and presenting recommendations on candidates for consideration by the full Board of Trustees. The first meeting of the Presidential Search Screening Committee is scheduled for early October.

Conducting a National Search
Choosing a College president is one of the most important decisions the Board of Trustees makes as it will decide the direction of the College for years to come. After conducting an extensive national selection process, we are delighted to have selected the Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT) to assist the Board of Trustees in designing and conducting the presidential search.  ACCT has conducted over 300 community searches and will bring a wealth of information to our process.  ACCT’s mission is to strengthen community college governance through education, advocacy and service. Dr. Narcisa A. Polonio, Vice President, ACCT – Board Leadership Services, and Ms Julie Golder, Board Leadership Specialist, will serve as the Search Consultants.  They have assembled a team including ACCT search and reference consultants and ACCT staff to assist the College.  In addition, Kim Olson, Administrative Assistant to the President, will serve as the Board’s Presidential Search Liaison.

Public Forums
We are holding public forums to ask both the College and the communities we serve for their thoughts and ideas on the development of the presidential profile to help our consultants recruit the most qualified candidates from around the country. Faculty, administrators, staff and students will have an opportunity to meet with Dr. Polonio and Ms. Golder at public meetings scheduled for October 8, 2007.  More information will be forthcoming on location and time. We will do our best to schedule public meetings throughout the College and to accommodate everyone’s schedule.

We want to encourage everyone to participate in the public forums and provide input into the development of the presidential profile.  This is an opportunity to learn more about the process, timeline, and recruitment and how you can become involved when we bring the final candidates to participate in open public forums.

Web Page
We will regularly post information on the web page regarding the presidential search process including:

·         Timeline for the presidential search

·         Progress reports

·         The presidential profile

·         Information on how to apply

·         Key documents of interest to potential candidates

·         Related links of interest to potential candidates (local Chambers of Commerce, local newspapers, schools, colleges and universities, key attractions, etc.)

·         General information on the College and the community

Placement of Ads

We are moving forward with the preparation and placement of print ads announcing the vacancy in the Chronicle of Higher Education and other higher education publications in late September.  We want to take advantage of the ACCT National Leadership Congress, September 26 – 29, 2007, to be held in San Diego, CA.  This will be an important recruitment opportunity.  We anticipate placing the completed position profile on the College’s web site soon after the October meeting of the Presidential Search Screening Committee.

The Board is committed to undertaking a national presidential search process that will reflect the highest level of integrity, fairness and our commitment to serve the College.  Should you have any questions or suggestions please feel free to reach out to Dr. Narcisa Polonio at narcisa_polonio@acct.org, or by calling her at (202) 276-1983 (mobile); or Ms. Julie Golder at (202) 775-4466, or jgolder@acct.org.
