Web Development Resources

You must consider a professional, clean look in developing program pages.

Exclusive Rights - Web Team reserves the right of final approval on all web development hosted on WITC servers.

Accessibility Resources

Guidelines have been established for people with disabilities to make it easier for them access content information from the web.  That is why all images must have alternative text, why cascading style sheets should used,  and why page and table properties should be configured.  For more information see Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 1.0.

Design Issues

Do not use underline - can be confused with a link.

Italics should be used sparingly if at all because it is difficult to read.  To emphasis, it is better to use bold.

Do not use all upper case on a page....use sparingly when trying to draw attention to a part of a page.

Always spell check your files.

Security - request technical assistance for securing documents i.e. PowerPoint, class notes...anything that is not for public viewing.

Content - responsibility of instructor and instructor's supervisor.  Timed information must be maintained to provide most current, up-to-date information.

Be sure to check your work in both Firefox or Chrome and Internet Explorer.

Frame Development - contact Web Team for recommendations.

Hyperlinks

Using FrontPage:

  1. Type in the text you'd like to use as your link, i.e. Web Standards
  2. To avoid the possibility of the text merging with a current link on the page, you must insert a blank row above and below the text you just keyed to be linked.   Note: You will delete these rows in step 6.
  3. Select that text (highlight), click on Insert/Hyperlink or click on the Hyperlink icon (to the right of the Insert Picture icon), the Create Hyperlink dialog box will then open.
  4. In the Create Hyperlink dialog box insert the URL either by typing it in or clicking on the icon to the right of the URL box, find your intended location and return to the dialog box. The location should automatically be inserted in the URL location when you return. If not, just copy and paste, or type in the URL location.
  5. Click OK and your hyperlink has been created.
  6. Delete the blank rows from step 2, that you inserted above and below the hyperlink.

Creating an External Hyperlink (Opens a new browser window, keeping your user at the WITC site while they visit the hyperlink):

  1. Complete steps 1-3 above.
  2. Notice that there are a set of options indicated as "Optional" below the URL location in the Create Hyperlink dialog box. On the right side click on "Target Frame" (there is a button to the right with "...", click on that).
  3. There are a list of options called "Common Targets" in the Target Frame dialog box. Choose "New Window", then notice the "Target Setting" area below, the hard html code "_blank" is inserted there. This indicates that a new browser window will open when you click on the external link you've just created.
  4. As an example, here is an External Hyperlink leading us out of the WITC site. It opens a new browser window and leaves the WITC window open and available for us to come back to without using the "back button." http://www.goplayoutdoors.com
  5. If using hard code, this is what the code would look like for this technique:
    <a href="http://www.goplayoutdoors.com" target="_blank">http://www.goplayoutdoors.com</a>

Images

  1. Requests for graphic development may be made to Web Team.
  2. ALL images are to be stored in an images folder within your folder on the webserver. If many images are used, consider creating a filing system inside your images folder.
  3. Photos larger than 300 pixels wide should be resized using graphic software. Recommend large photos be resized to 250 pixel width but not greater than 300 pixels.  Note:  If larger images are required, recommend that you warn the visitor or create a thumbnail image and link to the bigger image  .
  4. Photos are to be saved in .jpg format.
  5. Images are to be saved in .gif format.
  6. DO NOT use any images saved as .tiff or .bmp (these are too large and create slow downloads).
  7. Images - must have alternate text and dimensions of the image.
Right click on image, select picture properties to check alternate text.
Select appearance tab to verify dimension specifications are listed.
  8. DO NOT, REPEAT, DO NOT use the handles around the image to increase or decrease the image size. To resize an image, use graphic software such as Corel Paint Shop Pro or Photo Shop.
  9. If you are using FrontPage to resize your picture, you must also resample so the image is reduced both in size and in number of pixels used.
  10. Shadows may be used to enhance an image. Use graphic software to create shadow.
  11. You may scan images and send to the Web Team for assistance.  Scan at 100 dpi and attach to an email or save to CD.

NOTE:  Corel Paint Shop Pro has been selected as the graphics package of choice for image and graphic development.  A copy of Corel Paint Shop Pro should be available in all Teacher Learning Centers.

Multi Media

Request must be made to the WITC Web Team for approval to add multi media files to web files served by WITC servers.

Please check back often for updates and changes.

Web Team Assistance

Please notify the Web Team prior to beginning a new project.  A request can be made to the Web Team to develop a template or a template may be submitted to the Web Team for approval prior to project development.  Call x 4546 or contact the web team to begin the process.

Text files used to develop web pages may be attached to an email, or submitted on a flash drive. Microsoft Office is the preferred word processing software.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Do not use tabs to create columns. Tables is the only acceptable format for information displayed in columns. Photos do not need to be scanned. Original photos will be returned - however, if you want to scan them, they should be scanned at 75 dpi and saved in .jpg format.
